Transcript
Different teams come up with different toward and away moves! What a team decides isn’t the most important part. The important part is that the team can have a conversation about something that could lead to misunderstandings and conflict if it isn’t discussed beforehand. By having the discussion in terms of "toward and away from the shared purpose", it provides a psychologically safer way to discuss difficult topics.
This doesn’t mean that everyone behaves the same way. In one of the teams we worked with, they discussed whether working with the door open was a toward move or an away move. They decided it was a toward move because team members could collaborate more. But one team member stated “I have ADHD and there’s no way I can concentrate with the door open. I’m going to have to close my door to get my work done”. But this was helpful information because the team had been interpreting the closed door as a sign the team member wasn’t interested in anyone else.
The team habit builder allowed the rest of the team to understand that *for that team member* that behaviour was a toward move.
