Session 3 - Yielding - Part 3

Transcript

Now that we covered those good uses, we should warn that yielding is not a good “go-to” strategy and if you rely on it a lot, that is usually a red flag. You may be neglecting your own needs to “save” the relational aspects, in conflicts. While yielding might work in one-time interactions, it often backfires over the long term. This is especially true in leadership roles, when consistently yielding is not a sustainable or effective style. It tends to create long-term problems if we don’t deal with things that are happening. and if your perspective as a leader isn’t taken into account we also will have long term problems because you have a lot of expertise.

But, when this style is called for, you can focus purely on listening, validating, and offering support. If you're not very familiar with this style or don't use it often, check out our skills section to improve your listening, validation, and support skills. Adding these skills to your toolkit will help you employ them effectively when the situation calls for it.
